View Full Version : Indian Culture
jhn 4th July 2008, 01:18 PM The term culture refers to a state of intellectual development or manners. The social and political forces that influence the growth of a human being is defined as culture.
Indian culture is rich and diverse and as a result unique in its very own way. Our manners, way of communicating with one another, etc are one of the important components of our culture. Even though we have accepted modern means of living, improved our lifestyle, our values and beliefs still remain unchanged. A person can change his way of clothing, way of eating and living but the rich values in a person always remains unchanged because they are deeply rooted within our hearts, mind, body and soul which we receive from our culture.

kuldeep 4th July 2008, 05:14 PM The Indian culture is one of the best and good in the world this time. The best part of our culture is that the way of our communication to each other and the reputation for the every religion and every thing.
rocky 4th July 2008, 05:35 PM I dont think that we are losing it.It is that we are just expanding beyond the culture too that is why critics think that we are losing it.We have started thinking more towards the science and technology to stay head to head with other developed countries and it is necessary .But some people think that because of the advancement of india it has some where lost its cultures which is totally wrong.
purushottam 6th July 2008, 09:46 AM 'jhn' has rightly stated and others have followed the point. I also say that culture of any society depends on the family back ground. Look a person who his highly cultured in the sense that if follows the spirit of culture, character, celibacy, abstainity, does not have bad habits and do believe in 'earned' money though he is poor. But his next door neighbour may be just reverse. Why because of the family back ground and the circle in which he moves. Thus the culture has also effect of the society. The reality is that we cash bad things early and ignore good things because of easy way is always preferred.
purushottam 25th July 2008, 11:22 AM :rolleyes:What the Indians have to say who are residing in foreign countries. Listen to them.
From: "Ajay" <icq_29@yahoo.com>Add sender to Contacts To: PROUD2B_INDIAN@yahoogroups.com, "rahul.khede" <rahul.khede@yahoo.com>Hi... It is all a bunch of confused logic. I do not agree with the broad generalization that there are no Indians abroad who are not proud to be Indian.. On the contrary the abundance of places like Indian grocery stores, Temples, Cultural groups and communities are testament to their heritage. I am not sure about what you mean when you say Indian... are you talking about the cultural heritage or are you talking about the patriotism. Humility is a virtue and differs with every individual. We need to be proud of our tolerance and acceptance of other cultures. As a native Indian and having spent several years abroad, I have seen nothing but proud Indians in whatever community i have resided in. Exceptions are everywhere. Regarding the North Indian and South Indian(regional) differences, they exist even in India. You should not be surprised to be finding that abroad. BTW there is a very popular quote... "When you are in Rome, be a Roman.." If people adapt to new cultures... it is not necessarily out of disrespect for their own.

i friends,
There is no country which is perfect. There are certain factors
that influences people to move to different places. Lets not only
focus on only America and Indians going to America. Far back in out
history Indians have been travelling to different parts of the world
and settled there, some are still holding the roots back in India and
some are not. Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Dubai,England and
many other European countries are few to mention. As an Individual
everyone thinks development and progress in their life. We have to
work for India as its our mother land. I agree to that. When I am
struggling to find a proper job sitting at home, half of my life time
is gone and in the rest of my life I have to struggle to maintain a
family and its best. When should I find time to work for India? And
this is the mindset that drives many to other countries. And it can
not be blamed. We are reason for good or bad leaders.. In present
situation in India, Indians are in a state that they can choose a bad
leader than a worse leader. And presently we are doing our best to get
bad leaders..at least not worse. Look at our youth..what they are
into... They are enslaving themselves to uncivilized cultures
forgetting to be proud of that they are from a culturally rich and
civilized society. We are losing our Identity to identify ourselves
with other cultures. Wearing vermillion is Indian tradition and many
indians abroad are finding it to be backward. No Indian abroad is
proud of himself or herself. They are seeking some identity and that
is not theirs but just to keep up with others. I have met with many
families which has lost its Indian identity due to serious inferiority
complex. We dont need a technological revolution at this point of
time..we need a pscyhcological revolution WHICH WILL BRING THE
TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER. We treat cows holy...we
are polytheist.. And for a foreigner it all looks funny and it does
not mean that we have to give up what we have been following for few
thousand years. We dont have to feel backward rather we must seek why
our ancestors did that. Most of the germans whom I met with were proud
of themselves. But when Indians meet abroad, they show differences
among themselves. North Indians do not feel good to socialise with
south Indians, keralite feel not good to socialise with telugu, Tamils
are not comfortable with kannadGas, Gujarati's are not acquainting
with Bengalis..so on..... But they show high humbleness towards
non-indians. We are losing our identity and its high time to focus on
that....India has been stayin as one country amidst all diversities
and we must be proud of that...and that feeling must be instilled in
all of us. We dont have to be embarassed in front of a non-indian to
identify ourselves ( irrespective our linguistic and state
differences) . That is the real proud feeling of being an Indian. or
else talkin something and practising something else would be
hypocritic behaviour of us. As Gandhi practised, The Change that we
want to see in world is the change that we see in ourselves. Lets
shake off our hypocritic and chameleon behaviours. Lets be proud of
identifying ourself as Indian and we should be proud of coming from
India where we are living democratically with multiple races,
cultures, religions and languages... Lets show this to the rest of the
world. That is the real proud feeling...

I had an opportunity to read letters by Prof.Pothen and by Mathew Nalumacky in Free Press,Indore edition. When it comes to religion it is above reason and logic and one cannot be convinced by any argument of any nature. However we should consider these views in right perspective and should also read in between the lines. Though we live in modern age and enjoy all benefits of the said age but by attitude and aptitude have not changed and we like and behave like aboriginal tribes and people of medieval age. We commit mistake when we speak of celibacy with reference to religion. We have always taken a narrow sense of the word celibacy. We expect persons concerned directly with service of god- the almighty should by no means indulge with sex and should wear a particular form of dress, grow beard, moustaches and hair. They are expected not to mix with society and should not be social as human beings are. But at the same time they are expected to serve the people in the shrines etc. This is not at all broad thinking. If we see most of such people are indulged in materialistic activities and are least concerned with religious activities. Merely by living in a particular style and attire one does not become a priest or so. His all attention is in making money. I think celibacy has nothing to do with religion or leading such life. Why a married one cannot be priest [or say him by any other name for any other religion]. What is expected is he should be a man of chastity and this is expected from every human being as nature has bestowed us with reasoning power. Who on earth or from heaven told that such priest couldn’t be a priest without celibacy? Even the religious heads of any religion may be and are married persons having their families. If one were not meant to have sex one would not have been given the body parts to do it. Our ancestors had made such rules in old ages when social, economical and scientific development was not made.
Let priest and like persons should live with their families and they will be more devoted with the service of god. The true meaning of celibacy should be chastity that is non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing and non-possessiveness known as moral restraints. In addition purity, contentment, self-study, worship of god and austerity are called moral restraints and observances. It is nearly impossible and impracticable to live in celibacy if we mean thereby to have no sex at all either physically or mentally. By visualization one may indulge in sexual activities. Who can stop? . A man should not parade in such fashion. Even Gandhi fell off wagon of this one. Our approach should be apriori. eagle 16th August 2008, 07:20 PM This is not correct. Most indians are only happy when they see other indians fail, and are stuck in the same mess theyare in. That is why india is so poor, no one wants someone else to succeed so everyone stays in the same mess. This kind of thinking is the cause of muchthat is wrong with this nation, and until this changes, it will remain this way. Some one wrote that americans think, when they see some one in a nice car, if i work hard i can have one of those too. Indians think why is that person in that car and not me? Drag everyone too the bottom and sit there with nothing but poverty and mess, until this changes you will have nothing better to look forward to. Also, this is the thing that has stifled so much of this nations potential, look at america and what it has achieved, why cant india do the same?
purushottam 16th August 2008, 08:44 PM :rolleyes:Leg pulling is our fundamental right, ?We feel satisfied when others are in trouble and we feel depressed when others achieve success though nominal. This was not our culture but now when we have turned from spiritualism to consumerism and materialism we have developed this attitued. Our present system of government has also compelled to do so.
